Cell Biology Flashcards

Cell biology is where most pre-nursing science coursework starts, and it's also one of the more common places students feel behind. This deck covers the building blocks: cell theory, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, organelles, and the processes cells use to grow, divide, and communicate.

Because so much of nursing practice traces back to what's happening at the cellular level, including infection, healing, and medication effects, this deck also connects each term to a short clinical note, so the vocabulary doesn't stay abstract.

Who this deck is for

Students building a foundation in biology before or during nursing prerequisites, especially anyone who hasn't taken a college-level biology course recently.

Topics covered

Cell Foundations Cell Types Cell Structures Membrane Structure Membrane Transport Bulk Transport Genetics Protein Synthesis Energy Metabolism Cell Chemistry Cell Division Cell Regulation

Sample terms

Cell Theory

The scientific theory stating that all living organisms are made of cells, the cell is the basic unit of life, and new cells come from existing cells.

Selective Permeability

The ability of a membrane to allow some substances to pass while blocking or limiting others.

Sodium-Potassium Pump

A membrane protein that uses ATP to move sodium ions out of the cell and potassium ions into the cell.

Nucleus

The membrane-bound organelle that stores most of the cell's DNA and controls gene activity.

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

A membrane network covered with ribosomes that helps produce and process proteins for secretion or membranes.

Mitochondrion

An organelle that produces most of the cell's ATP through aerobic cellular respiration.
